Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring instrument which can exhibit optimum measuring capability depending on the material or shape of a measuring object. SOLUTION: This measuring instrument comprises a main body 1, a spindle 11 installed in the body so as to be axially-movable, and a digital display section 232 for digitally-displaying the movement position of this spindle. When the spindle is allowed to be in direct contact with the measuring object while being axially-moved, the dimensions of the measuring object will be measured from the movement position of the spindle at that time. Also the instrument includes a measurement capability detecting means 233 which detects the measuring capability of the spindle for pressing the measuring object; and an indication holding means for holding an indicated value of a digital display section, when the measuring capability detected by this measuring capability detecting means has reached the predefined measuring capability value.
