Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve characteristic control device for an engine efficiently suppressing knocking. SOLUTION: The valve characteristic control device is applied to an engine performing ignition timing retarding control for suppressing knocking and variably controls valve characteristics of an intake valve according to engine operation conditions. The valve characteristic control device corrects a control target to a side reducing compression end temperature in a combustion chamber (step 160, 170) when ignition timing retarding angle by retarding control is larger then a predetermined value. This correction is done only when deterioration of engine performance accompanying ignition timing retarding angle by retarding control under a state without the correction is estimated to be greater than deterioration of engine performance accompanying correction of control target of the valve characteristics (step 160: YES).
