SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyphenylene ether is characterized as follows. An alkali metal salt (a1) of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl ether is reacted with a 4,4'-dihalogenated diphenyl ether (a2) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (X) in an organic solvent (Y).
