Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy and suppress emission of nitrogen oxide generated by making air fuel ratio lean to the air while increasing output of an engine without generating torque shock by over-supercharging by a turbo type supercharger by setting air fuel ratio of at least one side cylinder connected to a supercharging exhaust passage in which a turbo type supercharger is installed leaner than theoretical air fuel ratio in a multi-cylinder engine with the turbo type supercharger. SOLUTION: Lean air fuel ratio control is executed to No. 2 cylinder 3b and No. 3 cylinder 3c connected to a turbine of the turbo type supercharger 13. Nitrogen oxide discharged in large quantity by such lean air fuel ratio control is absorbed by NOx absorption catalyst 47. Nitrogen oxide absorbed by NOx absorption catalyst 47 is discharged and purified by executing temporally forced rich control to No. 1 cylinder and No. 4 cylinder not connected to the turbine 32.
