MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristics and excellent running performance (especially excellent tape wound-up shape after running) and suitable for high density digital recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and a binder on one surface of a non-magnetic substrate and a back coat layer containing carbon black on the other surface. The back coat layer contains a compound represented by general formula (I) and has ≤250 pieces/265×350 μm2protrusions having ≥50 nm height on the surface thereof. In general formula (I), A represents a component which can form an azo dye together with X-Y. X denotes a group selected from bivalent bonding groups represented by structural formulae. Y denotes a group represented by general formula (II). In general formula (II), Z denotes a lower alkylene group, -NR2denotes a lower alkylamino group or a five or six-membered saturated hetero ring containing a nitrogen atom and a denotes 1 or 2.
