Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that quickens the end time of main scanning and relieves an operation load imposed on a user. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with: a preliminary scanning execution section 81 for allowing an image data acquisition section 10 to start preliminary scanning when an original cover is closed up to a prescribed position; a background density detection section 42 for detecting the density of a background area of the original on the basis of preliminary scanning image data obtained by the preliminary scanning; and a background area eliminating section 83 for eliminating the background area from main scanning image data obtained by main scanning when the detected density of the background is a specified value or over.
