Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder capable of heightening accuracy in the origin positions of a rotating shaft and a rotating slit plate and centering and performing setting, in a short time. SOLUTION: In the rotary encoder, the rotating slit plate 3 is positioned and fixed to the rotating shaft 5. A center hole 3b freely, fitted over the rotating shaft 5, is formed at a center part of the rotating slit plate 3, and origin marks 10 for a slit plate, indicating the origin position of the rotating slit plate 3, are provided for at least two locations in the peripheral edge of the center hole 3b. The rotating shaft 5 is provided with origin marks 11 for a rotating shaft indicating the origin position of the rotating shaft 5, and the rotating slit plate 3 is mounted to the rotating shaft 5 at a position at which virtual extensions of the origin marks 10 for a slit plate at at least two locations which coincide with the origin marks 11 for a rotating shaft.
