PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus capable of relieving a digital image in which generation of the digital image reproducible and exposure adjustment fails even in a reproducing apparatus having the small number of reproducible gradations, and to provide an image storing method and an image storing program. SOLUTION: This image pickup apparatus is provided with an image pickup means for picking up an object and outputting a digital image; a storage means; a main image generating means for generating a main image representing the object represented when the object is picked up in a first exposure range narrower than the latitude of the image pickup means on the basis of the digital image outputted from the image pickup means; a sub-image generating means for generating a sub-image representing the object represented when the object is picked up in a second exposure range, in which one part is not overlaid on the first exposure range on the basis of the digital image outputted from the image pickup means; and an image preserving means for storing the main image and the sub-image in the storage means so that they are associated with each other.
