Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight having high luminance with low power consumption. SOLUTION: The backlight comprises a short arc type HID lamp 4 emitting light in almost all directions; a reflector 3 configured to include this HID lamp 4, have a reflecting plane 3b with an arcuate cross section and a wholly slender shape, and a slender opening 3a formed by the end part of the reflecting plane 3b, reflecting almost whole of light incident from the HID lamp 4 to the side of the opening 3a; a reflecting means 5 disposed on one long side of the opening 3a of the reflector 3 in such a way that it is approximately continued to the arcuate reflecting plane 3b to reflect at least a part of light from the opening 3a; and a planate light-emitting means 6 facing the reflecting means 5 through a hollow area 7 and configured to transmit the light.
