Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell in which attack by a hydroperoxy radical to a proton ion conductive solid polymer membrane is suppressed, and a stable performance is retained for a long time, and also to provide a solid polymer fuel cell with a high performance in which the membrane electrode assembly like this is used. SOLUTION: In the membrane electrode assembly in which a catalyst layer side of a gas diffusion electrode at which a catalyst layer 3 and a gas diffusion layer 5 are provided is arranged to become the solid polymer membrane side on the both faces of the proton-ion conductive solid polymer membrane 2, a protective layer 4 containing a component for improving oxidation resistance, such as for example a radical scavenger and a hydroperoxide decomposer in a polymer material is made to be interposed at the joined face to the solid polymer membrane 2 and the catalyst layer 3.
