PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely swap peripheral components in a computer system with respect to power management for PCI devices. SOLUTION: A method for safely swaping the peripheral components in the computer system includes; detecting the position of a first mechanical retention latch which has an open position and a closed position and is coupled to a computer expansion card slot (402); filtering power management events to prevent the computer system from powering up in the case that the first mechanism retention latch is in the open position (402); and allowing the computer system to accept power management events in the case that the first mechanism retention latch is the closed position (408).
