Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber having excellent cost performance and a flameproof fiber suitable for obtaining the same and to provide methods for producing the flameproof fiber and the carbon fiber, which are suitable for producing them and have high productivity. SOLUTION: The method for producing the flameproof fiber comprises heat-treating a precursor fiber in the presence of at least one kind of an organic compound at 50-400°C so that a weighting percentage represented by formula: weighting percentage=äWo×DR-Wp}/Wp×100 (Wo: flameproof fiber weight (g/m); Wp: precursor fiber weight (g/m); DR: total draw ratio in flameproof treatment) reaches 10-1,000%.
