Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the cycle characteristics of a lithium secondary battery using an electrode with an active material layer containing silicon (for example, amorphous silicon thin film) on a collector consisting of metal which is not alloyed with lithium (for example, copper foil), as a negative electrode. SOLUTION: The lithium secondary battery is characterized in that in an X-ray diffraction pattern of CuK α rays of the negative electrode, after charging is carried out up to a charging depth in the range where a peak of a compound of lithium and silicon (for example, intermetallics compound such as Li13Si4), is recognized, for example, within the range from 18 to 28°C, then, discharge is carried out up to a discharge depth at which the peak disappears.
