Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of display defects and malfunction caused by dust of an alignment layer generated by rubbing alignment treatment by effectively removing or damming the dust, in a liquid crystal display element having the alignment layer subjected to rubbing alignment treatment. SOLUTION: Protrusions 4, steps 20 or grooves 6 are provided along peripheral edges of a substrate 1 on the outer sides of a region where the alignment layer 3 is provided on the surface of the substrate 1. The dust of the alignment later generated when the rubbing alignment treatment is performed can be removed or dammed by the protrusions 4, the grooves 6 or the like. For instance, the protrusions 4 are provided at two parts on the entrance and exit sides in a direction in which rubbing alignment treatment proceeds. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
