SYSTEM FOR AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION AND METHOD THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for conducting automatic configuration after installation of a network printer and a method therefor. SOLUTION: The system and the method avoid the burden on manual configuration by a user and a system administrator. The network printer is associated with a printer description file, a driver, a spooler and a port monitor. This system includes a bidirectional application program interface, for allowing the driver to generate a bidirectional request and a bidirectional response, which is associated with the spooler. This system further includes a syntax in the printer description file for representing and associating the bidirectional request and bidirectional response with print feature. Furthermore, the system includes an extension file stored in the driver for correlating the bidirectional value and a printer value, and a notification infrastructure controlled by the port monitor for providing a bidirectional notification of a configuration change to the driver and a selected application.
