Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recording density in the line direction and the track width direction. SOLUTION: Magneto-resistive effect layers 24-27 constituting a TMR element 2 are held between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 31. A pair of vertical bias layers giving a bias magnetic field to a free layer 27 is held between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 31, and arranged at both sides of a width direction of the magneto-resistive effect layers 24-27. The pair of vertical bias layers consists of only soft magnetic layers 34a, 34b and do not include an anti-ferromagnetic layer. The aspect ratio of the soft magnetic layers 34a, 34b is, for example, 5 or more. The interval d2 between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 31 near the both sides of track width direction of the magnetic resistance effect layers 24-27 is smaller than the interval d1 of the magnetic shield layers 21, 31 of a part holding the magneto-resistive effect layers 24-31 between them.
