Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which an image or a graphic image and a letter or line image are processed with high image quality by performing parallel processing of different image processing time without increasing the circuit scale, and to provide its controlling method. SOLUTION: A first image processing for making a decision whether pattern matching is performed or not by binarizing input multilevel image data and outputting the image data while smoothing based on the decision results, and a second image processing for screening the input multilevel image data by area gray scale in parallel with the first image processing and outputting the processing results while delaying in time to the first image processing are performed, and output image data of the first image processing or the second image processing is delivered selectively based on the decision results in the first image processing.
