Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lateral electric field type liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing the change in color tone between the minimum applied voltage and the maximum applied voltage and reducing the occurrence of display defects due to a local difference in the thickness of a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device of a transmission type having the characteristics shown in a chromaticity diagram is obtained by using a a light source having at least one maximum brightness value respectively in a portion from 400 to 500 nm and a portion from 500 to 600 nm and a portion from 600 to 700 nm within a light emission wavelength region and using a liquid crystal panel of the horizontal electric field active matrix type having the spectral transmittance characteristics necessary for satisfying the relation x>y>z when the value of the transmittance at the wavelength at which the brightness maximal value is shown in the portion from 400 to 500 nm of the light source is defined as x, the value of the transmittance at the wavelength at which the maximum brightness value is shown in the portion from 500 to 600 nm of the light source as y, and the value of the transmittance at the wavelength at which the maximum brightness value is shown in the portion from 600 to 700 nm of the light source as z.
