Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting apparatus which effectively utilizes light in the case the sizes of liquid crystal display devices arranged on both surfaces of a light transmission plate vary and is ameliorated in the luminance unevenness of the liquid crystal display devices. SOLUTION: A light source 1 is arranged on one end surface side of the light transmission plate 11 constituted to guide the exit light from the light source 1 to the side of the body illuminated from an exit surface. A first liquid crystal display element D1 and a second liquid crystal display element D2 are respectively disposed on both surfaces of the plate 11. The element D2 is smaller in display area than the element D1. A non-display region (a) of the exit surface on which the element D2 is disposed is equipped with a reflecting means 2. The light emitted to the region (a) is reflected by the reflecting means 2 and is made incident on the element D1 to increase the luminance of the element D1 and to reduce the luminance unevenness.
