Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a downright backlight and its light source realizing a liquid crystal display panel with a center area of a display screen of high brightness even if the screen is enlarged. SOLUTION: The plane light source has two discharge lamps (411, 412), (421, 422), (431, 432) of a turnup structure of a tube form in a U-shape arrayed back to back so as to have tube center parts facing each other, and each discharge lamp is lit with both high voltage type impressing alternate-current voltages with phases different by 180° on one and the other electrodes. Although brightness at the tube center is lower than at both ends of the tube for each lamp, since the lamps are arrayed back to back, a back-to-back part is equal to two lamps in effect, and therefore, the center part area of an image display screen has a brightness higher than the periphery part overall.
