Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing 4-t-butylcyclohexanol having a high content of the cis isomer useful as a raw material for a perfume under a mild condition. SOLUTION: The 4-t-butylcyclohexanol is produced by hydrogenating 4-t-butylphenol under coexistence with sulfuric acid (anhydride) in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and a solvent. A catalyst formed by supporting metallic rhodium or a rhodium compound on a carrier is preferably used as the rhodium catalyst.
