Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically start an ink jet printer, in which volatile solvent ink is used, with high reliability without any intervention of an operator. SOLUTION: The automatic starting sequence is prepared for the ink jet printer in which non-volatile ink for printing is used. A colorless washing fluid is used for removing in a liquid drop generator and from the outside of an orifice plate and from a charge plate at the time of starting. A jet of the washing fluid is established. The jet is excited. A charge voltage is impressed to a charge electrode which is linked with the charge voltage so as to deflect the jet toward a catcher. When the jet is deflected in such a manner, a jet fluid is simultaneously changed from the washing fluid for cleaning to printing ink. The ability to control the fluid jet by using the charge voltage prevents the fluid from splashing back on a charge lead line during transition from a supply fluid to the ink.
