Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a titanium oxide having a large specific surface area. SOLUTION: A titanium oxide precursor is selected from a titanium hydroxide obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of a titanium compound such as titanium chloride, titanium oxychloride, titanium sulfate and titanium oxysulfate with a base and titanium peroxide obtained by reacting the mixture of the aqueous solution of the above titanium compound and hydrogen peroxide with a base. The titanium oxide is produced by calcining the titanium oxide precursor under a water vapor partial pressure of 8,000 Pa or less and in a molecular nitrogen-containing atmosphere.
