Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure arc discharge lamp device that has a lamp and a driving means for the lamp. SOLUTION: The lamp (40) comprises mercury of a prescribed filling quantity and an envelope to form an electrical discharge chamber for housing a pair of electrodes, and the top end parts of the pair of electrodes are separated from each other and define the arc gap. The driving means for the lamp includes a means that prevents prills of mercury sealing object from being formed between the top end parts of the electrodes at the stop of operation of the lamp by acting on the electrodes. This means acting on the electrode may be means (42, 46) of decreasing smoothly the lamp voltage at the operation stop of the lamp or means (42, 44, 46) of making a short restrike of the arc once or more following the operation stop, or a means of vibrating the lamp after the operation stop of the lamp.
