Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell with high durability and high performance by preventing a short circuit between gas diffusion layers and to provide a method for manufacturing the fuel cell in high reliability. SOLUTION: In at least one electrode of a positive electrode and a negative electrode, an insulating layer is formed in a projecting part existing on the surface of a gas diffusion layer facing a polymer electrolyte membrane. The insulating layer is preferable to contain an inorganic insulating material and polymerizable resin. The insulating layer is formed by a method transferring the insulating layer previously formed on a support to the gas diffusion layer or a method applying a coating material containing an insulating material to the projecting part and drying or curing the applied material.
