Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method of regenerating a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst at a low exhaust gas and catalyst temperature when the exhaust gas from a diesel engine is cleaned. SOLUTION: When the temperature of the exhaust gas exceeds a limited one, a first regenerating method for changing a lean air-fuel ratio to a rich air-fuel ratio during the first regeneration time is applied. When the temperature of the exhaust gas is below the limited temperature, a second regenerating method is applied such that the lean air-fuel ratio and the rich air-fuel ratio are switched back and forth forming a sequence of rich/lean pulses with the number of 2-10 rich/lean pulses during the second regeneration time.
