Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recorder having a thin film back coat layer and excellent running durability since a triboelectric charge due to a slide on a tape guide pin at the time when a tape is running is suppressed and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing system using the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 1 has at least a magnetic layer 3 and a protective layer 4 consisting of a hard film consisting essentially of carbon in this order on one surface of a non-magnetic substrate 2 and a metal layer 7 having 1 to 50 nm thickness and a back coat layer 6 consisting of a hard film consisting essentially of carbon in this order on the other surface of the non-magnetic substrate 2. In the magnetic recording and reproducing system, a magnetic recording and reproducing device having a member which has a hard film consisting essentially of carbon and film-deposited on the part of the member coming in contact with the surface of the back coat layer is used when recording and reproduction of the tape-shaped magnetic recording medium 1 is performed.
