Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermal printer having a platen release mechanism for separating a platen from a print head in which idling of a platen bearing is prevented while sustaining a good operability in the mounting/demounting operation of the platen. SOLUTION: The thermal printer comprises a bearing 22 for holding a platen shaft 20a rotatably, a movable platen frame 24 for holding the bearing 22, a groove 30A made in the body frame 30 to engage with the bearing 22 at a position where the platen 200 touches the print head, and an arm 32 stopping at a part of the bearing 22 and locking under such a state as the bearing 22 engages with the groove 30A wherein the bearing 22 is formed in rhombic or elliptic shape and the engaging groove 30A has a shape corresponding to that of the bearing 22.
