Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the latitude of the shape of an optical waveguide while suppressing optical propagation loss at the curved part and branching part of the optical waveguide. SOLUTION: By forming a lower clad layer 11a on a substrate 10, providing a Y-branched optical waveguide 9 on the lower clad layer 11a and covering the optical waveguide 9 with an upper clad layer 11b, an optical element 8 is produced. The curved part of the optical waveguide 9 is tapered on the outer peripheral side and is formed to be trapezoidal on the cross section and the effective refractive index of the optical waveguide 9 is reduced on the tapered outer peripheral side. To the contrary, the end face of the optical waveguide 9 is formed to be rectangular and coupling efficiency with an optical fiber is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
