Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a rare earth element-doped optical fiber preform by which the PMD (polarization mode dispersion) can be reduced by an easy method and intrusion of bubbles can be prevented. SOLUTION: A quartz rod 2 doped with Er and Al is inserted into a quartz tube 1 and one end of the quartz tube 1 is sealed. The outer surface of the quartz tube 1 is heated with a burner 3 while the space between the quartz tube 1 and the quartz rod 2 is evacuated by use of a vacuum pump to collapse the quartz tube 1 to weld with the quartz rod 2. Heating is performed while controlling the temperature of the quartz rod 2 to a range from 1,000 to 1,400°C. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
