Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce chain driving noise by emitting excessively supplied oil generated in an oil supply passage leading from an oil supply port of a housing body to a hydraulic valve mechanism to the outside of a tensioner so as to restrain excessive supply into a plunger and to improve durability of tensioner interlocking parts by surely and smoothly driving the chain with an appropriate chain tension. SOLUTION: In this ratchet type hydraulic tensioner provided with a ratchet locking mechanism 13 and the hydraulic valve mechanism 15, in the oil supply passage 18 leading from the oil supply port 12b for pumping and supplying oil from a hydraulic source to the hydraulic valve mechanism 15, a discharge passage 19a for an excessive supply oil for emitting the excessive supply oil outside the housing body 12 is made to communicate so as to restrain the excessive supply into the plunger 11 and to reduce the noise called as whiz.
