Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element for carrying out display having sufficient brightness and contrast characteristics in both cases of functioning in a reflection type and a transmission type. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is provided with a liquid crystal cell in which a liquid crystal layer 8 is clamped between an upper side transparent substrate 4a and a lower side transparent substrate 4b, and a back light 2 arranged oppositely to the back surface of the liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal cell is provided with circular polarizing plates provided on the outer surface of the respective transparent substrates, a light diffusion layer 5 sticking the circular polarizing plate to the upper side transparent substrate, a cholesteric polarization reflection layer 32 provided on the inner surface of the lower side transparent substrate, a liquid crystal driving layer 7 provided between the upper side transparent substrate and the liquid crystal layer for controlling a voltage to be applied to the liquid crystal layer for each pixel, a color filter layer 10 provided between the upper side transparent substrate and the liquid crystal layer, and a visual angle compensation plate 11 provided between the lower side transparent substrate and the circular polarizing plate.
