Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive matrix type or an active matrix type organic thin film light emitting display such which high luminance, a long service life and low electric power consumption can be realized, and to provide its drive method. SOLUTION: The passive matrix type or the active matrix type organic thin film light emitting display is provided with first electrodes 2 arranged in a plurality of stripes on a transparent substrate 1, second electrodes 3 arranged along a crossing direction with respect to the electrodes 2 and in a plurality of stripes and at least an organic light emitting layer 4 which is held between the electrodes 2 and 3. Moreover, the display is provided, outside a display area 6 of the display, with a light receiving element 8 which includes a light receiving organic light emitting layer 9 made of the same material of the layer 4 and a detecting means which detects optical electromotive force generated by the element 8 receiving the light beams emitted from the layer 4 and controls the luminance of the entire display area of the display based on the detected information.
