Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely control the exhaust gas flowing into an HC adsorbing catalyst to the reduction side while HC is desorbed from the HC adsorbing catalyst. SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device comprises a three-way catalyst 25 including an oxygen absorbing material, disposed on the upstream side of the HC adsorbing catalyst 27, and a desorption determining means 42 for determining whether the operation condition is switched to the desorption operation condition in which the quantity of HC desorbed from the HC adsorbing material of the HC adsorbing catalyst 27 exceeds the quantity of HC adsorbed in the HC adsorbing material. When it is determined that the engine is in the desorption operation condition by the desorption determining means 42, the oxygen emission control is executed for controlling the exhaust gas on the upstream side of the HC adsorbing catalyst 27 to the reduction side so that oxygen is emitted from the oxygen absorbing material. Before the operation is switched to the oxygen emission control, the initial control is executed for reducing the quantity of oxygen absorbed in the oxygen absorbing material of the three-way catalyst 25.
