PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote control system that uses a terminal with a browsing software program such as a WWW browser installed thereon to control many kinds of appliances such as house hold electric appliances from a remote place by an economical and simple method. SOLUTION: The system is provided with a remote control information providing server 2 that can provide remote control information for remotely controlling each of appliances 4 to be controlled through a network, and an operator terminal 1 is installed with the browsing software program such as the WWW browser and with a communication means through a communication network. A remote control information acquisition processing section 3D of a remote controller 3 acquires remote control information corresponding to the appliances to be controlled from the server by means of communication between the server and the operator terminal through the communication network, an operation control section 3A reads data in response to the remote control from the operator terminal from the remote control information when receiving a request of the remote control of the appliances to be controlled from the operator terminal and an infrared ray transmission section 3B transmits the remote control signal to the appliances to be controlled.
