Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition giving coating film with high smoothness and good visual appearance and, when containing a brilliant material as the coloring component, good at flip-flop character, and to provide a method for forming multilayer coating film by using the composition. SOLUTION: This water-based coating composition comprises an emulsion resin which is obtained by emulsion polymerization of an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture 3-50 in acid value including >=65 wt.% of a (meth)acrylic 1-2C ester and a urethane-based compound of the general formula (1) or (2); wherein the urethane-based compound content of this composition is 0.01-20 wt.% on a solid basis. The other version of this water-based coating composition comprises a water-based resin which is obtained by dissolving or dispersing in an aqueous medium by the aid of a neutralizing base a resin having an acid value of 10-100, hydroxy number of 30-200 and weight-average molecular weight of 4,000-2,000,000 and the urethane-based compound mentioned above; wherein the urethane-based compound content of this composition is 0.01-20 wt.% on a solid basis.
