PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic still camera to obtain a proper video signal by automatically correcting black level depression due to a photogenic subject condition in still picture photography and a drop in signal level due to underexposure before digital image processing. SOLUTION: This electronic digital still camera is equipped with an A/D converting means 32 which converts a still picture video signal outputted from an imaging device into a digital signal, a memory means 33 which stores the digital still picture video signal converted into the digital signal by the A/D converting means 32, a signal level detecting means 34 which divides the digital still picture video signal stored in the memory means 33 into at least two or more areas and detects their video signal levels, a control means 38 which inputs the output signal of the signal level detecting means 34 and computes correction quantities of the video signal levels in the respective areas, and a digital amplification factor varying means 35 which varies the amplification factor by the areas of the digital still picture video signal stored in the memory means 33 according to the correction quantities.
