Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct output fluctuation to a deterioration of an air-fuel ratio sensor in a catalyst upstream side. SOLUTION: A catalyst 3 having oxygen storage ability is installed in an engine exhaust passage, an oxygen storage quantity is estimated on the basis of an output of the air-fuel ratio sensor 4 in the upstream side of the catalyst 3, and an air-fuel ratio is controlled so that the oxygen storage quantity matches a desired value. When an output of a downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor 5 continues to be in a lean side or a rich side exceeding determination timing which changes with operating conditions, the output of the upstream side air-fuel ratio sensor 4 is corrected on the basis of the output of the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor 5.
