SOLUTION: NOx trap quantity is estimated and when the estimated NOx trap quantity reaches the predetermined NOx threshold value (step 93), the fuel is additionally injected to make an air-fuel ratio rich in an expansion stroke of the operation in a stratified combustion range when temperature of the NOx trap catalyst is at the predetermined temperature of less (step S99, S101). Even if the catalyst temperature is low after setting the rich air-fuel ratio, operation is changed to the operation in an even combustion range to reduce the air quantity and set a rich air-fuel ratio (step S103). |
