Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce sulfur-containing free cutting steel which has excellent machinability, and to provide a method for stably producing the steel. SOLUTION: The sulfur-containing free cutting steel has a composition containing, by weight, 0.03 to 0.55% C, 0.10 to 0.35% Si, 0.3 to 1.5% Mn, 0.01 to 0.15% P, 0.03 to 0.5% S, 0.003 to 0.015% O and =20% of nonmetallic inclusions in the steel consist of oxysulfides. The sulfur-containing free cutting steel is produced by adding a wire made of an iron sheet including a mixture containing an alkali metal salt of sulfur oxoacidic anhydride and sulfur power to molten steel, and performing vulcanization and enrichiment of oxygen thereto.
