Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having excellent display characteristics by suppressing the deposition of contamination produced in the stage for rubbing an alignment layer. SOLUTION: An electric potential controlling member equipped so as to have the same polarity as the polarity of the substrate having the alignment layer is brought into contact with a rubbing roller to control the electric potential of the surface of the rubbing roller. The surface of the alignment layer is subjected to rubbing treatment in such a state to suppress the deposition of the contamination onto the alignment layer.
