Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct injection type internal combustion engine capable of reducing and improving exhaust emission by allowing a pilot injection at a timing earlier than in general. SOLUTION: This direct injection type internal combustion engine comprises a combustion chamber 16 partitioned by a cylinder bore 11, a cylinder head lower surface 15 and a recessed part 17 formed on the top part 12a of a piston 12, and an injection nozzle 23 for injecting fuel 26 from a nozzle hole 25 to the combustion chamber 16. The distance L from the nozzle hole 25 to the recessed part inner wall 17a in the fuel injecting direction is set to the length H of the liquid phase part of the injected fuel 26 or more when the piston 12 is located in a top dead center.
