Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve excellent running performance and durability of a magnetic recording medium by using a lubricant whose lubricating effect lasts over a long period and heightening adhesion stability of a protective film and the lubricant. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with a nonmagnetic substrate, a magnetic layer formed on the nonmagnetic substrate and the protective layer which is formed on the magnetic layer and whose surface is applied with treatment under the plasma atmosphere of an inert gas. The lubricant containing an ester compound of a perfluoropolyether having hydroxy groups at its ends and a long chain carboxylic acid shown by formula (1) and a long chain saturated fatty acid show by formula (2) is held at the outermost layer. R OCOCH2 -Rf-CH2 -OCOR (1). In the formula, Rf denotes a perfluoropolyether chain and R denotes an alkyl groups or a fluorinated alkyl group. R COOH (2). In the formula, R denotes an alkyl group.
