Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for a styrene polymer, in which the formation of a high mol.wt. component of polystyrene is inhibited and polystyrene with a narrow mol.wt. distribution and an improved compatibility with various polymers is obtained. SOLUTION: In polymerizing a styrene compound or copolymerizing a styrene compound with an aliphatic olefin copolymerizable therewith in a solution in the presence of an activated clay, at least one ether represented by formula (1) (wherein R1 is H or a 1C or higher alkyl; R2 and R3 are each a 1C or higher alkyl; and R4 is a 1-4C alkyl) is caused to coexist.
