SOLUTION: In effecting the oxidative polymerization of 4-substituted phenol, the ratio of two kinds of constituent units (phenylene units and oxyphenylene units) of the polymer produced is controlled by changing the ratio of the organic solvent to water in an organic solvent/water mixture system serving as a reaction solvent.
