Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new azobenzene derivative, and to provide a self- organized membrane obtained using it and having enough space capable changing its molecular structure and manifesting its function and the structure as to stably hold the space. SOLUTION: This azobenzene derivative compound is characterized by being shown by the general formula (1) (wherein, R1 is H, a halogen atom, 1-8C straight-chain, cyclic or branched-chain alkyl, fluoroalkyl, cyano, nitro, amino, an ester group, alkoxy or phenyl; n is an integer satisfying the relationship: 18>=n>=2; at least one of R2 to R9 is an alkyl or phenyl, the others being each H; and R10 is a thiol group or alkyl disulfide group). The other objective self- organized membrane is characterized by being a monomolecular membrane consisting of the above azobenzene derivative compound.
