Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the damage of monostability and the increase of a driving voltage of a chiral smectic liquid crystal. SOLUTION: If a retardation quantity obtained when either one polar voltage is applied to the chiral smectic liquid crystal is defined as RV and a retardation quantity obtained when no voltage is applied is defined as R0, the ratio of them (that is, the rate Rrate=RV/R0) in a panel are not made uniform on the entire surface of the panel but made different for every region. The problem is generated, that if the ratio Rrate is great on the entire surface of the panel, the driving voltage of the chiral smectic liquid crystal is obliged to be increased though its monostability is non damaged and on the contrary, if the ratio Rrate is small on the entire surface of the panel, the monostability of the chiral smectic liquid crystal is damaged. Thus the damage of the monostability and the increase of the driving voltage of the chiral smectic liquid crystal can be prevented.
