PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily decide a criterion to which the image data of a type belongs. SOLUTION: A pattern recognition dictionary preparing device is provided with a font control part 10, a rasterizer 12, a picture conversion part 14, a picture storing part 16, a parameter storage part 18 and a main control part 20. A group of fonts is stored in the font control part. The rasterizer reads the font of a prescribed character from the font control part and prepares a bit map picture based on this read font. The picture conversion part performs the deforming processing of the bit map picture prepared by the rasterizer to generate a standard pattern. The deforming processing is performed in accordance with a feature parameter (a font size, resolution, etc.), stored in the parameter storage part. The picture storing part stores the standard pattern generated by the picture conversion part by coordinating it with a character, that is a character code. The main control part controls the operation of the respective parts and monitors the delivering timing of a signal or data between the respective parts.
