Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binder for shell molds with which the crack of a core in casting a light alloy is prevented and further, the generation of formaldehyde in casting of the shell molds is suppressed. SOLUTION: This binder for the shell molds consists essentially of a bisphenol A denatured novolak type phenolic resin which is >=1,000 in the mass average molecular weight measured by a gel permeation chromatography, is >=1.0 in the ratio (I/II) of the peak height I of a relative holding ratio 0.80 to 0.81 to a phenol peak and the peak height II of 0.75 to 0.79 and is 30 to 60 seconds in gel time at 150 deg.C by JIS-K 6910.
