PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for printing of which the operation in preference between the letter output operation and the sales registration operation can be selected by a user according to the using conditions of the apparatus. SOLUTION: The indicia data transmitted through a corresponding interface 11 is printed by a journal controlling section for printing 8 and a controlling section for the receipt printing 7. For example, the detection of the absence of a journal sheet is determined to be effective and the detection of the absence of a receipt sheet is determined to be of no effect according to a command from a host machine and an input from a switch. The action of controlling section for journal printing 8 is stopped and an error lamp 21 is put on with memory of the indicia data in an indicia buffer 14 when the journal sheet is detected not to exist by a journal sheet detective section 10. The action of the controlling section for receipt printing 7 is not stopped and the indicia is printed only by the controlling section for journal printing 8 even when the receipt sheet is detected not to exist.
